Holotrain

Completed research project
HOLOTRAIN, the instructor that appears in mid-air

Three years of research to answer a single question: what would a course look like if the instructor were not a face on a screen, but a photorealistic hologram you could talk to?

Through HOLOTRAIN, Soft Tehnica developed an augmented reality training platform in which the instructor is a photorealistic, interactive hologram available simultaneously to large numbers of learners, wherever they are. The holograms are hosted in the cloud and delivered via streaming, so a training session is no longer dependent on a physical classroom or on the availability of a trainer.

What transforms the platform from a spectacle into a learning tool is its artificial intelligence layer. Audio-video and biometric sensors read the learner’s reactions in real time, machine learning algorithms interpret them, and a dedicated emotional state detection engine enables the virtual instructor to adapt its response instantly. The scenarios were developed through collaboration between teams specializing in augmented reality, holography, machine learning, psychology, and soft-skills training — a rare combination brought together within a single Romanian research project.

HOLOTRAIN became the starting point for the expertise that Soft Tehnica now applies in artificial intelligence. Building on the technology and knowledge developed through this project, new products were subsequently created, and the team went on to join national research consortia, bringing this accumulated expertise to new collaborative projects.

Project objectives

Creating the technology for generating photorealistic human holograms in augmented reality and developing an interactive assistant.

Developing the artificial intelligence module that processes, in real time, data collected from the learner through audio-video and biometric sensors.

Developing an emotional state detection engine to provide feedback adapted to the learner’s current state.

Creating virtual instructor scenarios through multidisciplinary collaboration.

Hosting the platform in the cloud and delivering holograms via streaming to multiple simultaneous users in different locations.

Developing collaboration with members of the Elinclus cluster to facilitate knowledge transfer along the value chain.

Results

  • The HOLOTRAIN platform, featuring a photorealistic, interactive holographic instructor, fully operational at the end of the implementation period.
  • Two market studies: one focusing on the training market and one on hologram creation and visualization technologies and augmented reality.
  • Dedicated ICT infrastructure for research, comprising 112 pieces of equipment and 77 software packages.
  • Wide-scale dissemination of project results, including information and promotional materials and a closing conference.
